Gubana, a traditional fruit, nut & grappa filled cake from Friuli in Northern Italy.

Gubana is a typical Friulian dessert, originally from the Natisone valleys (Udine). Know
n since 1409, as witnessed by Angelo Correr of Venice, it was a dessert intended for
special occasions as it was expensive for the richness of the ingredients.
According to a classical interpretation, the name Gubana derives from "gubat",
which in the local dialect means "to wrap". According to other scholars,
the reference to the particular spiral shape leads back to the Slavic "guba"
which means "fold". Gubana is a typical cake from Friuli, a native of the valleys
of the Natisone (Udine). Known since 1409, as witnessed by Angelo Correr in Venice,
was a cake for special occasions as expensive for the wealth of ingredients.
