Since 1993, Wendy Smith Born and James Barrett have been leading the artisan food movement in Philadelphia, waking up very early to stock the shelves at Metropolitan with crackling baguettes, San Francisco-style sourdough, levain, and other world class handmade breads. Though these elegant, flour-dusted loaves are at the heart of what Metropolitan is, they are by no means the only things they make.
Stop by in the morning for an almond croissant, a millet muffin, or a French berry roll, filled with dried berries. For lunch there’s roasted vegetable focaccia and ciabatta or brioche buns for sandwiches. And no matter what time of day it is, you’ll have a hard time resisting the sweets: fudge brownies, canele, ridged bundt cakes, and tall, layered ones covered in chocolate or coconut, too.
