Whether you’re a tourist looking for the perfect souvenir or a local in search of a sweet treat, the Pennsylvania General Store is the place to be. Michael and Julie Holahan opened it in 1987 as a lunch box catering business using the foods of Reading Terminal Market, but when someone asked them if they shipped Tastycakes they shifted their focus to building a collection of the best Pennsylvania-made products. These they assemble into gift baskets and goody trays to ship near and far. You’ll know you’ve spotted their shop when you see the handsome display of Hope’s Cookies, hand-dipped chocolate-covered pretzels, and tray after tray of chocolates, truffles, and caramels made by Pennsylvania’s premier chocolatiers. They also carry locally roasted coffee, Pennsylvania Dutch preserves and honey, handicrafts like ceramics and quilts, and handmade goods from young Philly artisans like Girls Can Tell, Wild Heart Paper and Tin Goat Soaps.
