Although alcohol and iodine solutions were previously quite popular, the potential for misuse for pure alcohol whereas, depending on the formulation, iodine may induce scarring or be less effective than alcohol based preparations as an antiseptic.
Dettol Antiseptic Liquid utilizes Chloroxylenol as the active antiseptic ingredient in a solution of pine oil, isopropyl alcohol, castor oil soap, caramel and water. Although bacteria do tend to develop a resistance over time and several strains are resistant to it in any case, it is a widely used disinfectant that is in general sufficiently effective.
The Dettol Antiseptic Liquid is quite concentrated and needs to be diluted before use. Instructions are provided on the bottle that instruct on how the solution is to be prepared depending on whether you intend to disinfect a wound, use it to disinfect your floors or your laundry.
Care needs to be taken in storing the Dettol Antiseptic Liquid as it is toxic and applying it in pure form may result in chemical burns. It should be kept out of the reach of children at all times and children should only be allowed to use it under adult supervision.
